From 20 May, the Van Gogh Museum presents Colour as Language, a retrospective of work by the artist Etel Adnan (1925-2021). The exhibition features more than 80 of her works, presented alongside ten works by Vincent van Gogh, who was a significant source of inspiration for Adnan.
The primary focus of the exhibition is on Adnan’s colourful paintings, while leporellos (notebooks with folded concertina-style pages), tapestries and literary work by the artist will also be on display.
The works are on loan from nine museums and several galleries, including the Centre Pompidou, Musée de l’institut du monde arabe, Galerie Lelong, Lille Métropole Musée d’art modern, d’art contemporain et d’art brut and various private collections. This is the first exhibition of works by this artist in the Netherlands.
