Signac passed this spot whenever he travelled from Paris to visit his mother in nearby Asnières. Like Claude Monet (1840 - 1926) and other Impressionists, he liked painting subjects connected with the railway: a symbol of the modern era. To paint this scene, he positioned himself behind a fence with a view of the stationmaster’s hut and the points.
Asnières is located just outside Paris. It was a favourite place for artists to visit. Van Gogh went there frequently. Signac was a friend of his.
