Self-Portrait with Palette
Armand Guillaumin (1841 - 1927), 1878
oil on canvas, 60 cm x 50 cm

This self-portrait gives the impression that you have just stepped into Guillaumin’s studio, interrupting his focus as he looks up, slightly distracted. Your gaze is drawn to the daubs of paint on the palette, with reds, yellows, greens, and blues echoed in the artist’s face.
Van Gogh deeply admired his friend Guillaumin’s creations, especially this portrait. He considered it strikingly modern and believed it could hold its own alongside the works of Rembrandt or Frans Hals. Vincent encouraged his brother Theo to invest in portraits, especially those of fellow artists. Theo purchased Self-Portrait with Palette for their private collection.
