When Vincent first moved to Paris, it wasn’t out of choice. He was transferred from The Hague branch of the Goupil art dealership to their headquarters in Paris.
In 1886 – after six years of working as an artist in the Netherlands and Belgium – Vincent returned to Paris. And this time it was his decision.
Moving in with his brother saved money, and at the time, the City of Light was the thriving centre of modern art. Vincent was looking for the ‘friction of ideas’ with other artists.
