If worn-out shoes could talk, they’d surely have lots of interesting stories to tell about the places they have been. Vincent van Gogh liked this idea.
He didn’t buy the pair of second-hand shoes you see in the painting to wear, but rather to use as a subject to paint. This gave them a new lease of life as models for his artwork.
