Van Gogh's Sunflowers
Vincent van Gogh painted a total of five large canvases of sunflowers in a vase, using three shades of yellow ‘and nothing else’. Thus, he showed it was possible to create a picture with many variations of a single colour without losing expressiveness.
The Sunflower paintings are among Van Gogh’s most famous artworks. He painted these in Arles, Southern France, in 1888 and 1889. Sunflowers were especially meaningful to Vincent: he saw them as symbols of inspiration, friendship and gratitude.
