With the title The Reception of Vincent van Gogh in Paris 1886-1914: Art Dealers, Collectors and Critics this study intends to clarify the actions of the artistic circles in Paris – artists, critics, collectors, dealers and institutions – in relation to the works of Vincent van Gogh in the context of their time, to gain a better understanding of his reception and reputation.
Questions central to the research include:
- How did Van Gogh interact with the French art market during his lifetime?
- Who were the first dealers and collectors to show an interest in Van Gogh's work?
- How did critics' opinions evolve and what did they publish?
- How did Van Gogh's rise to fame influence contemporaries such as the Fauves?

The PhD research is generously supported by the Gerda Henkel Stiftung. Thanks to their contribution, extensive archival research abroad is possible, and Bregje can focus her full attention to the project. Previously, the foundation supported a two-year research project exploring the significance of Doctor Gachet to Van Gogh.
