During the coming five years, Bregje will be trained to become a Van Gogh specialist by Senior Researchers Louis van Tilborgh and Teio Meedendorp from the Van Gogh Museum. Bregje will also work alongside Louis and Teio to contribute to various long-term research projects.
About Bregje
Bregje, 26, spent the last two years at the Van Gogh Museum as Assistant Curator and Junior Researcher in the Collection and Research Department. After obtaining two Bachelor’s degrees from the University of Amsterdam, she completed a two-year Master’s in Museology at the Ecole du Louvre in Paris. During her Master’s, Bregje conducted numerous research projects into Van Gogh, including extensive archival research into a 1947 Van Gogh exhibition at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris.
Junior Researcher
Bregje’s new position as Junior Researcher at the Van Gogh Museum provides her with the unique opportunity to become a specialist in her field. Her interest in 19th-century art and predilection for the work of Vincent van Gogh makes her the ideal person for the job. It is vital for the Van Gogh Museum that Senior Researchers have the opportunity to pass their specialist Van Gogh knowledge on to the next generation of researchers, helping to ensure that the expertise amassed in past decades is safeguarded within the museum. The Van Gogh Museum is extremely grateful to the private donors for their support, which will enable the museum to give shape to this fantastic junior position.
Bregje: ‘I can’t wait to get started and feel very privileged to have the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of experts and research the life and work of such a significant artist’.
Responsibilities
Bregje will work on various research projects in the years ahead. Her responsibilities include:
- Contributing to Collection catalogue 3. The Van Gogh Museum is currently working on the final part of a series of catalogues exploring the works in the museum’s collection. Part 3 addresses the paintings from the final years of Van Gogh’s life (1888-1890).
- Conducting research for exhibitions associated with Van Gogh. Bregje will also answer questions the museum receives about Van Gogh.
- Contributing to ‘Weave Matching’, a joint international project involving innovative research into which canvases Van Gogh used for his paintings.
- Contributing to research into discolouration in Van Gogh’s work. This research will be conducted in close collaboration with various universities, museums and research institutes.
