Vincent van Gogh enjoyed painting flowers, as did many of his contemporaries. He was one of only a handful of painters to give the sunflower the lead role in various flower still lives.
In contrast to traditional, darker floral compositions, his Sunflowers are explosions of colour. It is unusual that Vincent depicted not only flowers in full bloom but also withered flowers. He thought they shared the beauty of a weathered face.
Sunflowers were especially meaningful to Vincent: he saw them as symbols of inspiration, friendship and gratitude.
In 2020, we presented the first flower piece from our collaboration with bloomon: the Flowergram Sunflower edition. The arrangement features a carefully composed selection of dried flowers inspired by the works of Vincent van Gogh, including wheatgrass, cornflowers, nigella seed heads and of course sunflowers.
