The Van Gogh Museum and leading yoga and fitness brand Manduka have launched their first capsule collection. The Manduka x Van Gogh Museum collection is inspired by three paintings that Vincent van Gogh made during his stay at a clinic in Saint-Rémy, as well as by Van Gogh’s life, which was punctuated by periods of both mental vulnerability and strength.
At the collection’s heart is a search for peace and balance, a quest with which everyone can identify.
The collection
The Manduka x Van Gogh Museum collection features various interpretations of Van Gogh’s work, translated into items including the Manduka PRO yoga mat, a unique round yoga mat, foam blocks, a Yogitoes mat, towels and sports garments.
Van Gogh in Saint-Rémy
Van Gogh’s mental health fluctuated throughout his career. From May 1889 to May 1890, he had himself committed to the psychiatric clinic in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, where he hoped to find peace. Vincent wasn’t able to work during his darker periods, but when he felt well enough, he was exceptionally productive.
Whenever he could, he headed out into the garden of the clinic to draw and paint. Van Gogh made some 150 paintings during his time in the South of France, including the three works featured in the Manduka x Van Gogh Museum collection:
- Wild Roses (1889)
- Irises (1890)
- Almond Blossom (1890)
The collaboration
Manduka and the Van Gogh Museum hope that the collaboration will contribute to raising awareness of mental health. The capsule collection is available via the Manduka website, and a selection from the line is also available in the Van Gogh Museum Shop and webstore.
