The collection – featuring clothing, but also items including art prints and mugs – is Ceizer’s homage to Vincent van Gogh and the city of Paris. In addition to apparel, the collection also includes art prints and mugs.
Ceizer x Van Gogh Museum
The Van Gogh Museum and Dutch artist and designer Pieter Ceizer present a limited-edition capsule collection.
Homage
The Ceizer x Van Gogh Museum collection is inspired by the artwork Quinces, Lemons, Pears and Grapes, which Vincent van Gogh painted in Paris in 1887. This was a period in which Vincent found fresh inspiration: he started using brighter colours and lighter tones. One of these colours was yellow, which can be found in many of his masterpieces.
With this still life, Van Gogh showed that he was a genuine colourist, working almost exclusively with shades of yellow, as well as a little green, blue, red and pink. He used threads of wool to try out colour combinations before beginning to paint.
Vincent also painted the frame of this work. It is the only original frame that has survived. He dedicated the painting to Theo, who had frequently encouraged him to add more colour to his work.
More than a century later, Ceizer created his own version of the painting that inspired the entire collection. It’s an homage to Van Gogh and to the city of Paris, where Ceizer himself lives and works.
Pieter Ceizer:
“Art isn’t just a picture, art is a manifestation of a story. With this collection, I want to tell the story of a Dutchman who heads to Paris to discover himself, but then the 2020 incarnation with a mix of painting, graphics and streetwear. Van Gogh’s life, work and colours are so universal and timeless.”
The collection
The yellow woollen varsity jacket is at the heart of the collection, featuring Van Gogh’s original still life in the lining, and Pieter Ceizer’s framed version on the chest and back.
The collection also features long sleeved shirts, T-shirts and a hoodie, all made from organic cotton. Van Gogh’s quote: ‘I would rather die of passion than of boredom’ from letter #464 appears throughout the collection, including on one of the mugs. The art prints and graphics from the collection are all hand drawn.
