ANWB Museumcheck: how welcoming and accessible are museums for less mobile visitors?
Visiting a museum isn’t always a matter of course if you use a wheelchair or have difficulty walking. It’s for this reason that the ANWB is collaborating with the Museums Association to organise the second edition of the Museumcheck, which will see in excess of 2,000 volunteers visit approximately 20 museums throughout the country this autumn. During their visits, the volunteers will assess how hospitable and accessible the museums are as well as offer tips on how they could be made even more enjoyable for less able bodied guests.
The visits are scheduled for October and November 2014. The pairs of volunteers will use a questionnaire to assess a range of concerns including whether they have a satisfactory view of the exhibits, if suitable seating is available, the clarity of the information on the museum website and whether they received a warm welcome. Subsequent to their visit, the volunteer visitors will enter their findings using an online questionnaire and the results will be published on Het Land van ANWB – a website featuring thousands of ideas for exciting days out. The findings will also be discussed with each individual museum, providing them with a valuable insight into the experiences of less mobile visitors and offering them recommendations as to what could be improved.
The list of participating museums includes over 20 names. Aside from the Van Gogh Museum there's Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, the Kröller-Müller Museum and the Groninger Museum. But smaller museums are also included in the Museumcheck, such as the Natuurmuseum Fryslân (Frisian Nature Museum), the Museum van de Twintigste Eeuw (Museum of the 20th Century) and Kempenmuseum de Acht Zaligheden (Kempen Museum of the Eight Salvations).
The ANWB is looking for 50 volunteer pairs for each museum, comprising a less mobile visitor and a companion. You are not required to be an ANWB member to get involved. Check www.anwb.nl/museumcheck for more information (website in Dutch).
