Before Vincent went to Paris, Theo had already advised him to paint using brighter (less sombre) colours. However, at the time, Vincent didn’t understand exactly what his brother meant. Hardly anyone had heard of Impressionism in the Netherlands.
It was only when Vincent saw Impressionist and Pointillist paintings with his own eyes in Paris that he swapped the darker tones on his palette for brighter, unmixed colours. And then Theo could say: ‘I told you so…’.
